[Big
Bad kicks bad habit]
[October 22, 2001]
Spikes
craving for nicotine may be second only to his thirst
for blood, but in real life James Marsters has given
up cigarettes. "I have,"
he tells Zap2it.com,
"for the last year. I'm
on the patch." James now resorts to
the same trick that the X-Files William
B. Davies uses to play Cigarette Smoking
Man - "Horrible,
horrible herbal cigarettes. We smoke (fictional
brand) Morley's. We're the only two characters on
TV that do." The character of Spike
will continue to puff away - after all, whats
he got to lose? "Spike
doesn't care about his health. He's dead."
James points out. "I
don't smoke on the show unless the script dictates
it, unless there's a good reason. I don't want any
kids starting to smoke to want to be like Spike.
It does look cool, and when it's written in the
script, there's a good reason for it. But I'd never
want to fall back on it as an actors crutch." |
